For over a thousand years, human beings have turned to coffee for a quick boost in energy, focus, and alertness. We drink billions of cups of it a year (not us personally, I hope, but no judgement).

Coffee, we hear, is an entrepreneur’s best friend—a performance-boosting friend that keeps us alert and on top of things. The friend we just can’t live without.

You already know what I’m going to say. And I’m sorry. But coffee isn’t anyone’s friend, and especially not an entrepreneur who wants to stay on top of their game. If you want to be energized every day, able to think on your feet and roll with the punches, you’re going to want to look elsewhere. And here’s why:

Caffeine and Cortisol: A Vicious Cycle

The entrepreneurial life is a rollercoaster. We wear many hats, juggle many plates, and go, go, go 24/7. It’s an amazing ride…but it can take a toll on our bodies.

Your nervous system never learned to differentiate between the feeling of handling an HR disaster and, say, being chased by a sabre-toothed tiger. Your body floods your system with cortisol and adrenaline, giving you the strength and energy to survive.

And if you drink large amounts of coffee on top of that, the caffeine stimulates your body to release even more cortisol. When your brain recognizes the raised cortisol levels, it slows down your natural hormone production.

That’s when you start feeling more tired. Your responses are more sluggish. It’s harder to focus. And, unless you have some solid alternatives, you reach for more coffee to keep going.

And round and round you go.

The stress and lack of rest take their toll on you and your business:

  • Tasks and decisions that used to feel easy suddenly take all your attention.
  • You’re slower to react to problems—or you jump in without taking time to consider your options and then make issues worse.
  • You’re irritable and find yourself snapping at your team, micromanaging, or forgetting to follow up on things.

In short, you need to get out of this cycle of cortisol and caffeine, asap. It’s negatively affecting your business and not serving you. It’s fine to have the occasional cup of coffee—but using it to get through your day, every day, is actually making things worse.

Give yourself the support you need to perform at your peak every day—your business deserves it (and so do you).

Break the Cortisol Cycle to Optimize Your Performance

There are simple lifestyle changes you can make to boost your energy and keep pushing hard, day in and day out. They don’t take much time (you’re busy enough as it is) and they can make the difference between surviving and thriving.

  1. Having plenty of energy to handle whatever your day throws at you.
  2. Being the calm, focused leader your business needs, no matter how chaotic things are.
  3. Keeping able to chart your course, even on the stormiest day.
  4. Approaching your biggest business decisions with a clear head, knowing you can make the calls you need.
  5. Unplugging from work and enjoying time with your family.

And doing it all without feeling like you NEED that cup of coffee to keep going.

I promise, I am not trying to take your coffee away from you. Coffee is delicious and you deserve to be able to relax and enjoy it. The problem is when it totally controls your day and you feel like you can’t carry on without it—that’s the sign that it’s time to find better ways to up your game.
